A baseball hat is a kind of soft cap, with a flat crown and a hard peak projecting from front to back. The brim is usually elastic and can be pulled down over the ears or kept together around the brim by a string or cord. When baseballs are thrown, the brim will move up and down to deflect the balls. This is an important skill, as it helps one to have control over his/her baseball game.

As compared to white hat for ponytail worn by players on the field, a hat worn on the playing field is not a hard hat to find. In fact, you would probably be surprised at how many hats are sold in sporting goods stores these days. But why are baseball hats worn? Well, as the name implies, this is a cap which is used to cover the head and also protects the player's scalp from damage due to pitched balls. Earlier caps were made from cloth and felt but later on caps were made from cloth that was comfortable and facilitated good air circulation.

With advancement in fashion, baseball caps evolved into something else - the hat. It became a style icon and its wearer soon became identified as a 'head hunter'. Later on, baseball hats gained another identity crisis. Some baseball players (namely Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Rickey Henderson) donned visors and traded it with their baseball hats. This sparked off the popularity of baseball hats.

One would think that baseball hats have been around for so long because they are a symbol of baseball. But you couldn't be more wrong. In fact, the origin of the baseball hat goes back about 200 years. And although there are several theories about who invented it, none of them hold good water. It is believed that the first baseball caps were made in the USA by Samuel Joseph Wigington (who is believed to have come from Pennsylvania). Wigington apparently used cloth hats to test the durability of different caps. The cloth caps were used by the army during the war as headgear for horses and also to protect them from bullets. Since caps don't loose their form when hit by bullets, Wigington experimented with adding laces to caps and thus, the first baseball caps came into being. However, it's not clear whether Wigington ever used the word "cap" in his cap's name.

Two other well-known hat makers are Widows caps and Old England caps. Both companies manufacture baseball hats for the North American market. And both brands sell for around the same price. So which do you think is the better of the two? In my opinion, baseball hats are definitely better when compared to visors. click here to get a detailed overview of this topic: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/baseball-cap.
